Hemp paper lasts. The long bast fibre gives sheets unusual tear strength and very low acidity, which is why archivists like it and why most of it is made for conservation, art and specialist printing rather than for offices.
The usual explanation offered is suppression. The duller and more accurate one is infrastructure. The world's pulp mills are built around wood chip — continuous digesters, chip handling, chemical recovery all sized for it — and hemp arrives as long bast fibre bound to a woody core that has to be separated first. It jams equipment designed for something else.
So hemp pulp is made in small dedicated mills, at a fraction of the scale, and costs several times more per tonne. Where that cost is worth paying, hemp paper is genuinely superior: it is strong, dimensionally stable, naturally low in acid and it does not yellow. Where it is not, wood wins on price and always will until somebody builds different mills.

Bought pulp only needs soaking overnight. Raw hemp fibre needs an hour or two simmering with washing soda to break down the binding material, then rinsing thoroughly.
A blender in short bursts, or by hand. Under-beaten hemp gives a weak, lumpy sheet; the long fibre needs work to separate. This is the step people cut short.
A handful of pulp to a washing-up bowl of water. It should look like slightly cloudy water rather than porridge.
In at an angle, level, lift straight up, and let it drain. The wobble as you lift is what distributes the fibre — a still lift gives an uneven sheet.
Flip onto damp felt or cloth, press hard between boards, then dry flat under weight for a day. Drying unpressed gives a cockled sheet.
Plenty of historical paper was made from hemp and flax rag, which is a different process from modern pulping — it started as worn-out cloth rather than as a crop. Rag paper's longevity is a genuine and well-documented advantage; specific claims about individual famous documents are frequently repeated and rarely sourced.
Yes. The long fibre is an asset in a recycling stream, and hemp fibre survives more recycling cycles than wood pulp before it becomes too short to bond.
