Paper

Hemp paper lasts. The long bast fibre gives sheets unusual tear strength and very low acidity, which is why archivists like it and why most of it is made for conservation, art and specialist printing rather than for offices.

Why it is not everywhere

The usual explanation offered is suppression. The duller and more accurate one is infrastructure. The world's pulp mills are built around wood chip — continuous digesters, chip handling, chemical recovery all sized for it — and hemp arrives as long bast fibre bound to a woody core that has to be separated first. It jams equipment designed for something else.

So hemp pulp is made in small dedicated mills, at a fraction of the scale, and costs several times more per tonne. Where that cost is worth paying, hemp paper is genuinely superior: it is strong, dimensionally stable, naturally low in acid and it does not yellow. Where it is not, wood wins on price and always will until somebody builds different mills.

What it is actually good for

Art and print

Printmaking, watercolour, bookbinding. Takes water without cockling as badly as wood-pulp papers and holds an embossing beautifully.

Where most of it goes

Archival and conservation

Low acid without chemical buffering, and dimensionally stable across humidity swings. Used for documents intended to last centuries rather than decades.

The premium end

Papers that must be thin and strong

Cigarette paper, tea bags, banknote and filter papers — the traditional industrial use and still the largest by volume, because nothing else does thin-and-strong as cheaply.

Making sheets at home

From bought pulp or from your own hemp scraps. An afternoon, and a kitchen.

Soak, then cook if you are starting from fibre

Bought pulp only needs soaking overnight. Raw hemp fibre needs an hour or two simmering with washing soda to break down the binding material, then rinsing thoroughly.

Beat it, more than you think

A blender in short bursts, or by hand. Under-beaten hemp gives a weak, lumpy sheet; the long fibre needs work to separate. This is the step people cut short.

Make a vat at about 1% pulp

A handful of pulp to a washing-up bowl of water. It should look like slightly cloudy water rather than porridge.

Pull a sheet with a mould and deckle

In at an angle, level, lift straight up, and let it drain. The wobble as you lift is what distributes the fibre — a still lift gives an uneven sheet.

Couch, press, dry

Flip onto damp felt or cloth, press hard between boards, then dry flat under weight for a day. Drying unpressed gives a cockled sheet.

Common questions

Is it true old documents were written on hemp paper?

Plenty of historical paper was made from hemp and flax rag, which is a different process from modern pulping — it started as worn-out cloth rather than as a crop. Rag paper's longevity is a genuine and well-documented advantage; specific claims about individual famous documents are frequently repeated and rarely sourced.

Can I recycle it with normal paper?

Yes. The long fibre is an asset in a recycling stream, and hemp fibre survives more recycling cycles than wood pulp before it becomes too short to bond.

Why is my homemade paper weak?

Under-beaten pulp, nearly always. Hemp needs considerably more beating than recycled office paper to separate the long fibres so they can bond. Beat it twice as long as you think and compare.
