Dry skin

Hemp seed oil is unusually light for something this rich, which is the whole reason it turns up in this category. It absorbs rather than sitting on top — and the way you apply it changes the result more than the bottle does.

What is actually in it

Hemp seed oil is defined by its fatty acids, and the profile is genuinely unusual among plant oils.

Linoleic acid
55–60%omega-6, the one skin uses for its barrier
Alpha-linolenic
15–20%omega-3, rare in a skin oil
Gamma-linolenic
1–4%the same one evening primrose is sold for
Comedogenic
0–1very unlikely to block pores

Linoleic acid matters because skin uses it to build ceramides, part of the barrier that keeps water in. Dry and barrier-damaged skin is often measurably low in it, which is the mechanism behind hemp oil rather than a marketing story.

The low comedogenic rating is why it suits faces as well as bodies. It is one of the few genuinely rich oils that does not feel like a film an hour later.

How to use it, which matters more than which

Apply to damp skin

Straight out of the bath or shower, before you have properly dried. Oil does not add water to skin — it slows water leaving. Onto dry skin it has much less to hold in.

Less than you think

Three or four drops for a face, a teaspoon for a body. Too much does not absorb, which is where the belief that oils are greasy comes from.

Press, do not rub

Warm it between the palms and press it in. Rubbing a dry patch is friction on skin that is already irritated.

Give it two minutes

Hemp oil absorbs faster than most, but not instantly. Dress after it has gone in, or you will decide it is greasier than it is and will have oily clothes as evidence.

Twice a day, for a fortnight

Barrier repair is a slow process measured in weeks. One application tells you about the texture and nothing about whether it works.

What it will not do

The honest limits

It is not a treatment for eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis. Some people with those conditions find an oil like this a useful part of managing dry skin between flare-ups, and that is a different claim from treating the condition. If skin is cracked, weeping or infected, that is a doctor rather than a bottle.

It contains no CBD. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seed and is a food and cosmetic oil; CBD is extracted from the flower and leaf. Products often blur the two on the front label and separate them properly in the ingredients — where seed oil appears as Cannabis sativa seed oil.

It will not undo sun damage, and it is not a sunscreen. Nothing in this category is.

Common questions

Will it make me break out?

It is rated 0–1 on the comedogenic scale, which puts it among the least pore-blocking oils available. That is a population average rather than a promise about your face — patch test on the jaw for a few days before it goes everywhere.

Why does mine smell grassy?

Because it is unrefined, which is what you want. Refined hemp oil is paler and almost odourless and has lost some of what it was bought for. If it smells sharp or like old paint it has gone rancid, which is a different smell entirely and unmistakable once met.

Does it need to be in the fridge?

A skincare oil in a dark bottle, used within a few months, is fine at room temperature away from the window. If you have bought a large bottle, keep the bulk in the fridge and decant.

Can I use the cooking oil from the kitchen?

Chemically it is very similar, and people do. The differences are practical: cosmetic grades are usually filtered further and bottled in smaller, darker containers, and a kitchen bottle has been opened and warmed repeatedly.
