HS code

also: harmonised system code · tariff code
In a sentence. The international tariff classification number under which a hemp product is declared at customs.

An HS code is an entry in the Harmonized System, the global product-classification nomenclature maintained by the World Customs Organization and used by virtually every customs authority to identify goods, set tariffs and compile trade statistics. Each code opens with a six-digit heading that is identical worldwide; countries append further digits for their own tariff schedules.

Hemp has its own long-standing place in the system. Raw and processed hemp fibre falls under heading 5302 — 'true hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), raw or processed but not spun; tow and waste of true hemp' — with sub-codes separating raw or retted fibre (5302.10) from further-processed fibre (5302.90). Hemp seed is classified among the oil-seeds, and hemp seed oil among the fixed vegetable oils.

Because customs officers classify by HS code, the code a shipment travels under can decide whether it clears or is stopped — which is why exporters of fibre, seed and CBD products watch classification closely. See export, import and phytosanitary certificate.
